For almost 20 years, I’ve been deeply engaged in this field since eDiscovery was called “Electronic Data Discovery.” During those early days, there were just a few providers capable of aiding Attorneys in sifting through the ever-growing mass of Electronic Evidence that was starting to surface in litigation matters.
I was involved with many groundbreaking startups focused on revolutionizing the process by leveraging cutting-edge collection, processing, and review technologies to reduce time and costs significantly. Back then, our strategy involved tapping into sales talent primarily from large national legal research, legal advertising, and copy/scan/print vendors to get the word out about the new solutions. These professionals had the essential connections and networks within senior law firm leadership—key buyers who were incredibly eager for “EDD” solutions then.
It’s been an incredible journey witnessing the evolution of the eDiscovery vertical, with a myriad of companies and technologies emerging to address electronic discovery, security, and digital forensics. As the industry expanded, private equity firms recognized its potential and invested heavily. Several providers have even gone public, and the frequency of mergers and acquisitions has been staggering.
Considering the rise and fall of many eDiscovery providers in the last two decades, the future trajectory remains uncertain; however, the market has matured, with several well-known providers holding significant market share and a handful of technologies dominating the market. Regardless of how it unfolds, I’m committed to staying on this journey a little longer.
